DOCTORAL RESEARCHER Center of Expertise in R&D Monitoring at KU Leuven

The Centre for R&D Monitoring (ECOOM) is charged with developing a consistent system of R&D and Innovation indicators for the Flemish government. This indicator system is designed to assist the Flemish government in mapping and monitoring the RD&I efforts in Flanders.


  • We are looking for a full time (pre-) doctoral researcher (m/f) starting his/her first year contract in 2020 for an envisaged time period of four years in which a PhD dissertation is expected to become completed.
  • Your research will be part of a project, financed by the Flemish government, concerning“Interdisciplinarity and impact of research & development” and will focus on interdisciplinarity in science, technology and especially their interplay.
  • Research activities will include analyzing and validating existing indicators, developing new ones as well as assessing their relevance for diffusion dynamics and economic impact.
  • You will enter the doctoral program of the Faculty of Business and Economics (MSI) and prepare a doctoral dissertation at the Center of Expertise for R&D Monitoring – KU Leuven.
  • With your research, you will work at the crossroad of the bibliometric and technometric research groups, combining state-of-the-art indicators and techniques that are being developed in both groups.
  • This context provides a dynamic and inspiring scientific environment, with state of the art data infrastructure, where you will be working in a pleasant and constructive working atmosphere.


  • Although not restricted to these, you preferably have a background in Business Economics, Business Engineering,Economics, Mathematics/Information Science.
  • You show particular interest in science-technology-relations and you have affinity with quantitative approaches towards science and technology studies, including relevant developments in the field of big data/machine learning.
  • You should be able to show excellent (‘honors’-level) results in prior studies and be fluent in both spoken and written English.
  • Knowledge of Dutch would be an advantage. Most importantly, you should share our unbridled enthusiasm for scientific research and have affinity with policy implications.


  • A full time position at KU Leuven for a fixed term of four years with flexible starting date.

  • The salary will be determined in accordance with the legal salary grade systems existing at KU Leuven.
